Why is my vape pod leaking?

Vape pods leak when e-liquid bypasses the coil and escapes through the airflow system, the fill port, or the connection point between pod and device. It's almost never a sign of a broken device — in the vast majority of cases, leaking is caused by user error, a worn-out coil, or the way the pod is stored.

Both refillable pods and prefilled pods can leak, but refillable pods are more susceptible because the fill port seal can degrade over time or be incorrectly resealed after filling.

The most common causes of a leaking pod

Flooded coil

Too much liquid reaches the coil at once, causing it to leak from the airflow holes at the base of the pod.

Loose fill port seal

On refillable pods, if the silicone stopper isn't properly reseated after filling, liquid slowly leaks out.

Storing pod on its side

Leaving your device horizontal allows gravity to pull liquid into the airflow channels, bypassing the coil entirely.

Temperature changes

Heat causes e-liquid to thin out and expand. A hot car, direct sunlight, or pocket warmth can push liquid through seals.

Worn or burnt coil

An old coil loses its ability to absorb and vaporise liquid efficiently, leading to pooling and leaking.

Overfilling the pod

Filling a refillable pod past the maximum line leaves no air gap, causing pressure-driven leaking from the airflow.

Step-by-step fixes for a leaking vape pod

Work through these steps in order — the first two fixes resolve the majority of leaking issues without needing to replace anything.

1 Remove and dry the pod

Take the pod out of the device. Use a piece of tissue or kitchen roll to wipe the inside of the device bay and the connection pins on the bottom of the pod. Excess liquid on the pins is a common cause of both leaking and a gurgling draw.

2 Clear the airflow channel

With the pod removed, blow firmly through the mouthpiece. This pushes any flooded liquid back into the pod chamber. Wipe the mouthpiece clean, then reinsert the pod. This single step fixes most gurgling and leaking instantly.

3 Check the fill port seal (refillable pods)

Remove the pod and inspect the silicone fill stopper. Press it firmly back into position — it should sit completely flush with the pod body. If the stopper is misshapen or cracked, the pod needs replacing.

4 Stand the device upright and wait 5 minutes

Store your device upright with the mouthpiece pointing up. This allows gravity to pull any pooled liquid back down onto the coil, where it will be absorbed and vaporised normally rather than leaking out through the airflow.

5 Replace the pod if leaking continues

If the above steps don't resolve the issue, the coil inside the pod is likely worn out or permanently flooded. Replace with a new pod. For refillable systems, this means a new pod cartridge; for prefilled kits, swap in a fresh pod.

Refillable pod leaking — specific fixes

Refillable pods have a few additional failure points that prefilled pods don't. If your refillable pod is leaking specifically after a refill, work through these checks:

Check you haven't overfilled

Most refillable pods have a maximum fill line marked on the pod body or visible through the translucent casing. Filling above this line leaves no air gap at the top of the pod — and air pressure is what keeps liquid from flooding the coil. Always leave a small gap at the top when filling.

Make sure the fill nozzle is correctly seated

When filling, insert the nozzle of your e-liquid bottle directly into the fill port and tilt the pod slightly. This positions the nozzle tip against the inner wall, not directly above the coil, and prevents air bubbles that cause post-fill flooding.

Let the coil prime after filling

After refilling, always wait at least 5 minutes before vaping. This gives the cotton wick inside the coil time to fully saturate. Vaping before the wick is primed causes dry hits and can crack the coil, leading to permanent leaking.

Important: Never fill a refillable pod with sub-ohm shortfill e-liquids. Refillable pod kits are designed for high-PG or 50/50 nic salt liquids. High-VG shortfills are too thick for the small coils in pod kits and will cause flooding, leaking, and coil damage.

Replace the pod if the silicone seal is damaged

The rubber silicone plug that covers the fill port on most refillable pods is designed to be used around 20–30 times before it starts to degrade. Signs of a failing seal include liquid seeping out around the plug even when it appears closed, a plug that doesn't spring back when you press it, or visible cracking. Once the seal fails, no fix will stop the leak — replace the pod.

How to stop your pod leaking in the future

Always store your device upright, mouthpiece up — never flat on a desk or in a bag lying horizontally
Keep your device out of direct sunlight and away from heat sources (car dashboards, windowsills)
Don't draw too hard — long, forceful pulls flood the coil faster than slow, gentle ones
Replace pods and coils before they're completely spent; a worn coil leaks far more than a fresh one
For refillable pods, use the correct PG/VG ratio — 50/50 or higher-PG liquids work best
Avoid leaving a pod with very little liquid in it for long periods — a near-empty pod with a dry coil can crack under heat
Clean the connection pins between device and pod with a cotton bud every few pod changes

When to replace your pod

Leaking is one of the clearest signs a pod needs replacing, but there are other indicators to watch for:

A persistent burnt or dry taste even with a full pod
Reduced vapour production despite a charged battery
Gurgling sound on every draw that doesn't resolve after clearing the airflow
Discolouration of the e-liquid in the pod (very dark brown or black liquid means a burnt coil)
Leaking that continues immediately after following all the fixes above

Pro tip: For refillable pods, most coils last between 1 and 2 weeks depending on usage. Heavy vapers (20+ ml per day) may need to replace the pod or coil every 5–7 days to maintain clean flavour and prevent leaking.

Does a leaking pod mean my device is broken?

Almost certainly not. The device body (battery unit) is sealed and does not come into contact with e-liquid during normal operation. If liquid has entered the device bay, wipe it clean and dry and leave the device upright with the pod removed for 30 minutes before use. Avoid charging a device that has visible liquid in the USB-C port — let it dry completely first.

If the device fires inconsistently after cleaning, try a new pod before assuming the device is faulty. Ninety percent of "broken device" complaints are resolved by replacing the pod.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my vape pod leaking from the bottom?

Leaking from the base of the pod almost always means a flooded coil. E-liquid has pooled around the coil and is escaping through the airflow holes. Remove the pod, blow through the mouthpiece to clear the excess, wipe everything dry, and reinsert. If it continues, replace the pod.

Why does my refillable pod leak after I fill it?

The most common reasons are overfilling (leaving no air gap), not sealing the fill port properly, or not waiting long enough for the coil to prime. Fill to just below the max line, ensure the stopper is firmly seated, and wait 5 minutes before vaping.

Is it safe to vape a pod that has been leaking?

Once you've cleaned the device and replaced or fixed the pod, yes. Do not vape from a pod that is actively leaking into your mouth — this is a sign the airflow channel is fully flooded and the draw will be unpleasant. Clear the pod and dry the device first.

Can e-liquid damage my vape device?

Small amounts of leakage that reach the device bay are unlikely to cause permanent damage if cleaned promptly. Liquid left on the connection pins can cause poor contact and intermittent firing. Liquid entering the USB-C charging port is more serious — always dry the port thoroughly before charging.

Why does my vape gurgle when I inhale?

Gurgling is caused by liquid pooled in the airflow channel — the same root cause as leaking. Blow through the mouthpiece with the pod removed to clear it, then wipe everything dry. If gurgling persists after two or three clears, the coil is flooded and the pod should be replaced.

What e-liquid should I use in a refillable pod to prevent leaking?

Use nic salt e-liquids with a 50/50 PG/VG ratio or higher-PG blends (e.g. 60PG/40VG). High-VG shortfill liquids (70VG and above) are too thick for most pod coils and will cause flooding and leaking. Check your device's recommended e-liquid type in the product description.

How long should a refillable pod last before it starts leaking?

A quality refillable pod should last 1–3 weeks with regular use before the coil starts to degrade. If your pod is leaking within the first few days of use, the cause is almost always a filling or storage issue rather than a faulty coil.
